Radio Host &
Producer.
Reggae in the Fields is the longest-running
reggae program in Canada and one of the longer-running
community radio shows in the country.
Broadcasting on the community station CKCU-FM(Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada), Reggae in the Fields started in 1977
with Junior Smith as host and producer. Now, with Smith
hosting and producing, the show is the most important
forum for Ottawa's Black community and, at the same time,
has a diverse audience expanding beyond the Black community.
Besides reggae (music, features and interviews),
the show features Caribbean news, radio dramas (a staple
of Jamaican radio) and open-line discussions on a variety
of topics including community-police relations, religion,
Rastafarianism, education and others.
The title comes from a Jackie Mittoo song,
the idea that there are many fields and variations of
the music.
Reggae in the Fields was the 2002 winner of the Peter
Tosh Memorial Award. Presented at the Canadian Reggae
Music Awards for the show's 25 years on the air.
Saturdays 3 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. (EST) on CKCU-FM
93.1 broadcasting to eastern Ontario, western Québec
and upper New York State.
